German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Teagyn *Youth*. New name: Tara

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $400
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 8 Years 7 Months (best estimate)

Teagyn is a gorgeous 10 month-old girl who came to us from a reservation in SD. Did you know that Reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care? Many of them die due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness among other causes. We are so glad that we were able to help Teagyn leave that tough life behind :).

Teagyn is loving her safe, comfortable new life in her foster home, and she is quite enthusiastic about it! This gorgeous girl is still all puppy. She likes chewing on bones and running around with a ball in her mouth. She wants every toy that any of the other dogs have but plays well with them. She is working on not jumping up and not mouthing.

Teagyn looooves her food! She still doesn't seem to believe that she won't have to go hungry again. Her foster parents have to watch her closely so that she won't try to steal the other dogs' food after she wolfs hers down! She is doing great with leash-walking. When she arrived into rescue, poor Teagyn had a UTI with painful crystals in her urine, which slowed down her potty-training a bit. She is now fully recovered. She is working and doing well on her potty-training. She still has some submissive peeing, but has shown huge improvement with that and the potty-training since she arrived into rescue! She is an adorable, sweet, affectionate girl who will make a lucky owner very happy.

Like all German Shepherd youngsters, Teagyn will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
