German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Sasha *Miracle Dog*
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
Current Age: 10 Years 6 Months (best estimate)
Sasha is a gorgeous, regal girl whom we were able to spring from a high-kill shelter in the nick of time, in partnership with the fabulous Miracle GSD Network. Poor Sasha seems to have had some rough beginnings. She arrived very skinny and was found to have tapeworm; skin issues including hair loss; and broken canines with pulp exposure. Sasha has sice been treated for all her issues and after having some dental work as well, she is now feeling like new, and is ready for a furever home of her own!
Sasha is a sweet, gentle girl, who loves people. Sasha does wonderful with the dogs in her foster home. Like many GSDs, she needs slow introductions with new dogs. She's a cuddler and is very docile. Sasha does not need to be kenneled, and does well having the run of the house when her foster parents are gone. She knows some basic commands. She loves her dog bed and curls up to sleep on it at night. Like many GSDs, Sasha does show some prey drive when she comes across small critters outside. She knows some basic commands. She's very smart and loving.
We suspect that this sweetheart must have been treated unkindly in the past, as she's very sensitive about being told no, and then acts like she fears she is going to be hit :(. But she is becoming more confident every day, as she learns that she is in a safe place, and that only good things await her. Sasha is not fond of loud noises and thunderstorms. She loves grass!! And she recently discovered that she loves tennis balls! She enjoys chasing them...sometimes chewing them a bit, and just kicking them around. She LOVES car rides and is great on a leash. She's good with kids, as long as they aren't screaming or moving too fast (she's still a bit jumpy when it comes to noises and unexpected movements).
Sasha is an extra sweet, endearing girl, who will steal the heart of her forever family!
