German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Tessa

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $325
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Size: 41 Pounds
  • Current Age: 6 Years 9 Months (best estimate)
Tessa is a beautiful young girl who came to us from a Reservation in SD, where she was living a pretty rough life as a stray. When Tessa arrived, she was very skinny, sick with intestinal parasites, had significant hair loss and scabs, and she was itching terribly due to a severe case of Sarcoptic Mange. Her skin was very raw and itchy, and for weeks, Tessa received frequent vet care (including mange treatment) as well as lots TLC in her amazing foster home. Luckily, the mange has all cleared up, she has put on a healthy weight, and her fur has come back, soft, full, and beautiful. Tessa is fully recovered and ready to find her furever home!

Tessa is a 7 month-old girl puppy who is friendly, sweet, and gets along with pretty much everyone! She is a charming, long-legged girl, who still has not outgrown that adorably clumsy puppy phase. Her ears have a mind of their own and tend to flop every which way. She is loyal, alert, and so sweet! Tessa is a smart cookie and loves to learn new things. Tessa is crate-trained, potty-trained. Tessa enjoys long walks, playing with other dogs, watching comedies after dinner with her humans, and sharing her blanket with you on the couch. She will even curl up into a ball of sorts to try to fit on your lap. Tessa is very social and would love an active home with either humans who are home a lot, or with a dog buddy. Tessa is a sweetheart and an absolute catch!

Tessa's adoption fee is $325, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.

Like all German Shepherds and other herding breeds that we have in rescue, Tessa will need training consistency, boundaries, and sufficient activity and socialization.
Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his leash skills, manners, and social skills. Our dogs make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
