German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Hobbs

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 10 Years (best estimate)

Hobbs is a stunning, approx 2 year-old boy whom we rescued from a reservation in SD. Reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die young due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness among other causes. We are so glad that we were able to help Hobbs!

Hobbs arrived in extremely bad shape, suffering from severe hair loss, full of scabs, and itching terribly. Poor Hobbs was suffering from Sarcoptic mange. Hobbs has now completed his treatment, his fur has come back very nicely, he is no longer itchy or uncomfortable, and our vet has given him the all-clear!

Hobbs is a fabulous boy who is truly thriving in his foster home. He is sweet, gentle, well-behaved, and truly a gentle soul. He has the most soulful eyes and it's hard to meet him and not fall in love with him.

Hobbs can be a bit timid in new situations and may lay down or cower a bit. Speaking in a soothing voice, offering treats (which he loves!) helps reassure him, and the more positive exposure and gentle socialization that he gets, the more confident he becomes.

He enjoys car rides. He is crate-trained in the house. He waits patiently for his turn when getting treats with the other dogs in his foster home, and takes treats gently. He walks pretty well on a leash. He likes to cuddle on the couch and lay by you for snuggles. Hobbs is still a bit scared of having his collar grabbed. And he is doing great working on not jumping up.

Hobbs is a pretty mellow boy who gets along well with other dogs and enjoys playing, but who might also be fine as an only dog. He plays gently with the other dogs and he is a real sweetheart.

Hobbs is a wonderful, kind, gentle, very special boy. He loves his new life as a cherished indoor pet. His eyes seem to tell how grateful he is to have been rescued and he just wants to please his humans. He will make an extraordinary companion for a very lucky adopter.

Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
