German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Molly

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $275
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 10 Years 2 Months (best estimate)

Molly is approx 2 year-old girl. She is a very loving, shy, petite girl, who was living as a stray in a small rural area where many dogs are dumped. When she had a litter of 8, a good Samaritan took pity on the little family and worked very hard to find rescue for Molly and her puppies, who had had no vetting, and were becoming quite ill.

Our awesome volunteers drove all night and day to this little family's rescue. By the time they arrived back in Omaha, the pups were pretty sick: 3 of them had to be hospitalized for a few days, they all had severe intestinal parasite infestation, had various skin conditions (mange, open sores), and they all required several rounds of antibiotics. We are glad that we got them in the nick off time! In between great vet care, and all the TLC they received in their foster home, they all pulled through and are now thriving!

Molly is a gentle, intelligent girl. She has been a very good mom to her puppies, loves her humans and shows her appreciation with sweet kisses. She has a playful side that's been coming out more now that is feeling comfortable and safe in her foster home. She is house-trained and loves the comfort of her pillow bed. She is a wonderful girl!

Molly came to us Heartworm positive, but she has completed her treatment and she is now looking for her furever home! She is a sweet, shy, smart girl who is very lovable. She is still a little scared of new places and car rides. But she is coming out of her shell little by little: she now wags her tail at visitors that come to the house, and she really enjoys going for walks. Molly is house and potty-trained. She has good manners and knows some basic commands. She will make a fabulous, faithful companion for a very lucky pet parent!

Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
