German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Rusty *Molly's Puppy*. New name: Captain

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $425
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 8 Years 5 Months (best estimate)

Rusty is an approx 10 week-old boy puppy, who was living as a stray with his mom and littermates in a small rural area where many dogs are dumped. A good Samaritan took pity on them and worked very hard to find rescue for mom and puppies.

Our awesome volunteers drove all night and day to this little family's rescue. By the time they arrived back in Omaha, the pups were pretty sick: 3 of them had to be hospitalized for a few days, they all had severe intestinal parasite infestation, had various skin conditions (mange, open sores), and they all required several rounds of antibiotics. We are glad that we got them in the nick off time! In between great vet care, and all the TLC they received in their foster home, they all pulled through and are now thriving!

Rusty is a sociable pup who loves to be part of the fun and loves to be in the pack, with the other pups in the litter. He's a typical happy-go-lucky puppy who loves games, food, and naps! Rusty also loves to play in the water. Rusty is always on the go and is a very lovable, fun-loving pup, who brings to mind a playful teddy bear!

Like all German Shepherd and German Shepherd mix puppies, Rusty will need a lot of activity, socialization, boundaries, consistency and leadership in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.

Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
