German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Casper (Puppy) *Litter of TEN*
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $425
Species: Dog
Current Age: 8 Years 3 Months (best estimate)
Casper was part of an oops litter of 10 puppies that was rescued from a desperate situation, when their owner fell on hard times. The puppies arrived with a huge intestinal worm infestation, as well as one of the worst flea infestations that we have seen, their poor heads and bodies crusty with scabs and flea dust.
After many vet visits, dewormer, antibiotic, good hygiene, nutritious food and lots of TLC in their wonderful foster homes, their rough beginning is but a distant memory ;). The puppies in the litter are now plump, happy, fluffy, healthy-looking, gorgeous, and very active little pups, who are ready for their forever homes!
Casper is typical pup, he loves to play! He enjoys chasing his tennis ball and hanging out with his foster brother and sister. Casper enjoys naps in the sunshine and is content just hanging out doing whatever his foster parents are doing. He is coming along with his potty training and is working on leash training. He is a confident and happy puppy. He has been great with other dogs, cats, chickens, and children.
Casper would do best in a very active household that will provide plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Casper will need lots of exercise, socialization, boundaries, and leadership. For that reason, we are looking for someone with some experience with German Shepherds or similar working breeds.
Casper appears to be a German Shepherd/Husky/Lab mix. Like all German Shepherd and German Shepherd mix puppies, Casper will need lots of training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
