German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Harlow *Youth*

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 8 Years 10 Months (best estimate)
Harlow is approximately 1 year old. This sweet girl ended up as a stray in a very high-kill shelter in Kansas. Poor Harlow had a severe case of Demodex mange, with some open wounds and hair loss all over her muzzle, feet and back. Her skin was red, itchy, and very painful to the touch. This sweet, gentle, friendly, sociable girl, had no chance of leaving the shelter alive, without rescue. We are very glad that we were able to spring her out! For several months, Harlow received lots of TLC in her fabulous foster home (medicated baths, mousse, meds) combined with frequent vet appointments. Harlow's skin now has healed, her gorgeous coat has come back, and this super sweet, gorgeous girl is ready for a furever home of her own :).

Harlow is all puppy! She LOVES all toys: tennis balls, ropes, stuffed animals, playing tug-o-war with other dogs. Harlow is enthusiastic and a powerful chewer, so she needs a good supply of durable, heavy duty toys, Nylabones, etc...that can withstand her :). Her favorite treats are marrow bones. Harlow does great in her kennel.

Harlow has done great with other dogs of all sizes. The other dog in her foster home is her best buddy and he is 90 lbs. She did fine with a tiny 8lb dog that her foster parents dog-sat for a week. She has been around cats and kittens...she seems to love them too. However, she is a puppy, and she will try to chase kitties IF they run away.

Harlow seems to do great with people, including little kids. However, she does need to continue working on not jumping up when she is excited. Harlow is doing well on her leash-walking. She is a delightfully fun, sweet, active girl!

Like all German Shepherd youngsters, Harlow will need lots of training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.

Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
