German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Reese *Maddy's puppy*. New name: Lily

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $395
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 7 Years 7 Months (best estimate)

We recently rescued Madeleine, a very sweet and pretty Australian Cattle Dog mix girl from a SD reservation, who gave birth to 8 adorable pups only hours after being picked up. Maddy was very lucky to come into rescue when she did. Reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die on the Reservation due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness among other causes. Fortunately, Maddy and her puppies are now safe, and they will get to experience life as beloved family pets.

Reese is a sweet and sassy, utterly adorable, 9-week old girl puppy. She gets along very well with other dogs and puppies. And despite being the smallest of everyone in her foster home, she easily holds her own :).

This is what Reese would like you to know about her: "My foster parents are very impressed with how quickly I learn (I'm better-behaved at times than my two year old foster sibling)! I'm working really hard on potty-training and I've come a long way. I'm pretty easy-going and don't mind hanging out with my chew bone for awhile while my humans are busy- I love to chew, but stick to my play toys or sticks in the yard. Though I'm more independent, I love night cuddles with my foster mom after a long day of napping, exploring, and playing".

Not familiar with Australian Cattle Dogs? They share many of the same characteristics and needs as our beloved GSDs. While smaller in size, they are fiercely loyal, smart, and like GSDs, they require plenty of exercise, socialization, structure, and mental stimulation to become well-balanced, well-behaved dogs.

Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
