German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Georgia *Shiloh's Puppy*. New name: Maggie
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $375
Species: Dog
Current Age: 7 Years 2 Months (best estimate)
We recently rescued Shiloh from a SD reservation. Shiloh arrived into rescue with her eight adorable puppies, including Georgia. The little family was very lucky to come into rescue when they did - reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die on the reservation due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness, among other causes. In fact, poor Shiloh was extremely weak and undernourished when she arrived. Fortunately, Shiloh and puppies, including Georgia, are now safe, fully recovered, and ready to experience life as beloved family pets.
Georgia is a 9 week-old puppy. She is a sweet little girl who loves to play, cuddle, nap, and be around her humans. She loves her GSD foster brother, Tye, and follows him around everywhere he goes. Georgia loves to play with her stuffed animals and Tye. After a little bit of playing she enjoys long naps and prefers to cuddle during the naps. She is easy-going, but will definitely let you know if she is unhappy with subtle whining. She doesn’t like to be cold or be in the wind, so she wears her little coats to help her stay warm and comfy when she goes out. She is doing well with training and learns quickly. She is a very smart girl. Potty-training is going well. She understands what no means, and she really doesn’t have any bad habits. Georgia is a very sweet, loving, and well-behaved girl.
Like all German Shepherd Dogs, Australian Cattle Dogs, and other herding breed mixes that we have in rescue, Georgia will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
