German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

Hendrix was living in a 4x6 pen outdoors before being dumped at a small rural shelter, where he quickly landed on the euthanasia list due to space. Thankfully, our friends at Rave Rescue (aka the wonderful Jennifer Vandermeer) bailed him out before it was too late, and took excellent care of him until he came to us.

This is what Hendrix's awesome fosters have to say about him: "What a lover this boy is! Hendrix loves everyone he meets. This sweet boy can't wait to get up in your face and give you kisses. Hendrix is house-trained and will reluctantly go in the kennel when we have to leave the house. He loves to cuddle in bed with his humans at night. He does whine a little when he's unsure of his surroundings or of what is happening next. His favorite thing is getting our 2 dogs to chase him in the back yard. Hendrix does pull quite a bit on the leash but we're working on that. He rides great in the car and would make a great traveling partner. He needs a little more practice on sitting but he comes when called and will stay when asked to. He plays with squeaky balls but only briefly. Hendrix did fantastic with our young grandsons and seems to know to be very gentle with them. He gets along with other dogs. His favorite thing to do is be right by his humans. He is content to just lay at your feet for hours."

Like all German Shepherd Dogs, Australian Cattle Dogs, and other herding breed mixes that we have in rescue, Hendrix will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.

Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
