German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

Hugo is a handsome, very sweet young boy who came to us from a Reservation in SD, after he was found injured. Hugo is now fully healed, and ready for his furever home!

Hugo is almost 3 years old and  such a wonderful, active boy! He's a little timid until he gets to know you, but once you gain his trust, you could not find a more fun, devoted pup! He loves going for walks and outings. He enjoys car rides, going hiking, going shopping...he's always up for anything that involves hanging out with his humans!  Hugo is truly perfect, because he also loves to relax in the house and cuddle up for a movie! Hugo really loves his Kong toy filled with peanut butter, working for treats, and mealtime! He is very food-motivated,  very smart, and eager to please. Hugo loves being around other dogs and playing with them, and can get a little anxious if left home alone by himself (but does well with a doggy companion). Because of that, he is looking for a home with a dog buddy. Hugo is a truly fabulous dog, fun and playful, but with a very pleasant energy level. He is very agile and trainable and LOVES taking classes (Agility, obedience). In fact, he is a star in his Agility class! Hugo is a little unsure (scared) around strangers, and
needs slow, managed introductions to new people in his home (or to be crated). Because of that, a calm home without a lot of different people going in and out would be best for this adorable boy. Hugo is very well-behaved in public, walks well on a leash, and gets compliments wherever he goes! He  is sweet, bright and loving, and he has the softest fur!  Hugo would absolutely love a quiet home with a pet parent who is home a lot, and a dog buddy! Hugo is looking for a patient forever pet parent who will not rush him, who will allow him plenty of time to adjust to his new home, and who will continue to provide gentle, patient socialization.  He is an absolute delight!

Hugo's adoption fee is $325, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
