German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Shirley *Miracle Dog*

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Size: 51 Pounds
  • Current Age: 7 Years 8 Months (best estimate)

Shirley is a gorgeous, lovable, 2.5 year-old girl, who found herself in trouble at a crowded, high-kill shelter in Southern California right before the 4th of July. This is a very dangerous time for a dog to be in a shelter, as shelters fill extremely quickly due to the large amount of lost dogs (due to fireworks), and many animals end up being euthanized to make room. Thanks to our amazing friends at Miracle GSD Network, we were able to get Shirley out safely before it was too late.

It's impossible to meet Shirley and not adore her. She is beautiful and so loving! It's hard to imagine that not too long ago she was scared, hungry and alone as a stray in a kill shelter. Shirley's luck definitely changed when she hitched a ride to Nebraska, and things have been looking up for her since then! Shirley is sure that this is the way she was meant to live: she loves being a treasured household member, really loves her meals (she likes them to be right on time and savors each bite!).  Shirley is very eager to please. She knows sit, down, shake, and is working on stay. She listens to directions and tries very hard to do what is asked of her. In fact, we believe she takes pride in being so well-behaved! She likes her crate and will quietly stay until you come and get her. She has a list of other favorite things that include a soft bed, treats, a nice walk, more treats, and cuddling up with someone. BUT very most of all she loves people. This girl loves absolutely everyone. Shirley is well-behaved and a delight to take anywhere out in public. She walks great on a leash, and has a nice medium energy level. When it comes to other dogs in the house, Shirley can be a little bit more selective: she prefers calm dogs, and a small pack. Shirley would do great as an only dog (she would truly love being in charge of spreading all the love around the house) or with a submissive medium-to-large size dog that she can get to know slowly. Shirley is an amazing young girl, so full of love and devotion. All that she needs to make her life complete is you!

Shirley's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offsetting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.

Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
