German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Marnie. New name: Rudy

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Size: 62 Pounds
  • Current Age: 7 Years 3 Months (best estimate)

Marnie is a beautiful 2 yo GSD female who is fun, friendly, and affectionate. Marnie needed urgent rescue at the shelter, due to being Heartworm positive -the shelter is unable to treat or provide for the recovery of Heartworm positive dogs-. After we rescued Marnie, she successfully completed treatment, and she is now ready for a home of her own! Marnie loves hanging out with her humans, playing with her toys, going for walks, and getting treats! Marnie is an absolute love.

Marnie is gorgeous, sweet, and smart. She loves people and is eager to please.  She learns very quickly and is motivated by praise. She has been working on "watch me", "sit" (for food, to go outside, to be let out of her kennel), "down", and "leave it". Marnie is a lovely, affectionate companion who would love a pet parent who is home a lot. She prefers calm dogs, and does well with slow introductions. Marnie rides well in the car. Loves to go for walks. Once she's had her exercise, she enjoys getting comfortable to gnaw on a favorite stuffed animal or chew toys. Marnie is an adorable, very sweet girl, who will make a fabulous addition to a very lucky home!

Marnie's ideal home will have some prior GSD experience. While GSD youngsters are adorable, they require patience, structure, positive reinforcement, and redirection to channel their energy in appropriate ways. Marnie's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped. Learn more about the adoption process and requirements, and apply at: http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption.
