German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Leo. New Name: Joey “Moose” Maddux
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $425
Species: Dog
Current Age: 5 Years 1 Month (best estimate)
Leo and his brother Jasper were rescued from a high-kill shelter in Oklahoma. They were both sick with an upper respiratory infection that turned into pneumonia, and they required weeks of care and hospitalization before they were ready to travel our way. Luckily, they are both fully recovered, healthy, and ready for each find a forever home of their own!
Leo, the biggest of the two, is a classic black and tan 6 month-old GSD puppy, and we can tell that he is going to be a big puppy! From the moment be arrived, Leo was much bigger than his sibling, Jasper. And while Jasper, is a cute, little spitfire, Leo is a very sweet, gentle giant. Leo is a very nice, boy, and pretty mellow for a puppy. In fact, Leo’s foster mom tells us that he is the most-laid back foster puppy that they have ever had. Leo likes his crate and loves everyone, including kids. He lies on his belly when he eats and drinks. and he will sit on your feet and lean on you when you pet him. He is still losing his puppy teeth, but he has not given his foster mom any problems with chewing or biting, and is easily redirected to a chew bone. He is submissive with the other two GSDs in his foster home. He tries to tempt the younger more playful dog into playing with him, but he's nice and gentle about it! Foster mom tells us that you can actually can hear Leo when he is coming, because he stomps his big puppy feet! His foster parents believe he is going to be a pretty big boy once he grows out of his adorably gangily tween body! He likes being outside with his GSD foster siblings and enjoys laying in the middle of the yard with them. He is doing great on potty-training and is a very sweet, calm boy, with an amazing temperament. He will make a wonderful addition to a very lucky pack!
Like any of our dogs, Leo would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that his breed needs. Because of that, his ideal owner will have prior GSD, or other herding breed experience. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.
Leo's adoption fee is $425, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped.
