German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Ahsoka
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
Current Size: 41 Pounds
Current Age: 6 Years 4 Months (best estimate)
Ahsoka is two year old purebred Australian Cattle dog that was rescued when she was heavily pregnant. Luckily for her she was able to give birth to her 6 puppies in the comfort of her foster home. Ahsoka gave birth on July 21, 2020 to six purebred Australian Cattle puppies: four boys (Ezra, Kanan, Rex, and Zeb) and two girls (Hera and Sabine). Ahsoka and all six of her puppies have been thriving in their foster home and will need homes of their own once old enough.
Ahsoka is a sweet and gentle girl. She loves to hop up in your lap for scratches and gives you lots of kisses in return. She is a little cautious when first meeting new dogs but did not bat an eye when she met the cats, horses, chickens, or turkeys at her foster home. She did not even try to chase them, which is pretty amazing for a heeler. She is pretty calm and walks really well on a leash. She is working on a learning a few inside manners such as jumping up and begging for food. This little girl will make a wonderful addition to a patient family.
Ahsoka's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped.
Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply. Like all Cattle Dogs, Border Collies, GSDs, and other herding breeds and mixes, Ahsoka will need positive reinforcement training, consistency, boundaries, activity and socialization. Ahsoka's ideal home will be a household with a good routine and prior Australian Cattle Dog (or other herding breed) experience. Like any of our dogs, sweet Ahsoka will make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, activity and mental stimulation that her breed requires. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills and manners.
Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
