German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Cybele. New name: Midnight
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
Current Age: 9 Years 5 Months (best estimate)
Cybele is a gorgeous, sweet young girl whom we rescued from a kill shelter that euthanizes for space using the inhumane heartstick method.
Cybele is a sweet, gorgeous, very friendly and affectionate black GSD who loves people. She is approximately 2 years old, and has lots of energy! She loves to play fetch, and absolutely adores all dog toys and balls. Like most GSDs, she likes to stick super close to her humans, and is a total velcro pup. She seems to enjoy being around and playing with dogs her size, OUTSIDE of her home. However, she would strongly prefer not to share her humans at home with other dogs. Cybele has a strong prey drive around small animals. Because of that, she is looking for a home where she can be the only pet.
Cybele is crate-trained and potty-trained. She does her business outside quickly, but then enjoys "talking" to everything around her. She knows "get your rope" and loves what that means (fetch!). She also knows "sit", "stay", "okay" (to get into the car, which she absolutely LOVES car rides). She excels at "wait": you can place a treat in front of her, leave the room, come back five mins later and she'll still be waiting for the "okay" command! Sometimes she will move behind a chair or something, as if removing herself from the temptation, but she won't try to sneak it without being released :). She loves having jobs and being praised for good behavior/tricks. She is extremely smart and intuitive. She's also very athletic, energetic, loving, caring, and loyal.
Cybele will delight any active owner who will provide the exercise, stimulation, structure, and attention that this young, super smart girl needs! Like all German Shepherd youngsters, Cybele will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
