German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Scout. New name: Bandit

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $400
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 9 Years 3 Months (best estimate)
  • Location: Omaha, NE

Scout is an adorable 7 month old youngster. He was surrendered to us when one of the children in his previous home became severely allergic to dogs. Poor Scout was headed to the shelter unless he could find rescue. We are glad that we happpened to have room, as it would have been extremely hard to say "no" to this lovable, fun boy, who gives the sweetest puppy kisses!

Scout is a gorgeous, slender, typical high-energy GSD youngster. He is sweet and loving, but also very energetic and enthusiastic. He needs an active family who will exercise him, continue to teach him not to mouth or jump up, and continue to practice leash-walking. Scout is a little shy at first and he may submissively pee in certain situations, but he quickly recovers and warms up. As he continues to be trained, socialized, and he continues to gain confidence, he may very well outgrow this. Scout needs supervision and guidance around other dogs & cats, as he tends to be unleashed, exhuberant, and bossy if allowed. However, he is a very smart, eager-to-please puppy, and he corrects easily. He likes people and he is great with kids.

Like all German Shepherd puppies, Scout will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
