German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

  • General Color: Black with Tan, Yellow or Fawn
  • Current Age: 9 Years 4 Months (best estimate)

Misty is an adorable 11 month old youngster. She was surrendered to us by owners who due to health issues of their own, could not provide Misty with the activity and exercise that she requires.

Misty is a gorgeous, slender, typical high-energy GSD youngster. She is sweet and loving, but also very energetic and enthusiastic. She needs an active family who will exercise her, continue to teach her not to mouth or jump up, and continue to practice leash-walking. Mysti loves to run, go for long walks, car rides, and social outings :). She is a super fun, active, social girl! Mysti knows her basic commands, is crate-trained, and house-trained. However, like any other pup, she will chew on inappropriate items if given a chance, and needs close supervision. Misty can be a bit reactive on a leash and will need her adopter to continue socializing her and teaching her good manners.

Misty can be just a tiny little bit shy at first, but she warms up very quickly. She gives affectionate puppy kisses and loves to run and play. Misty needs supervision and guidance around other pets, as well as slow introductions. She is exhuberant and approaches everything with unbounded puppyish glee, so we recommend that she go to a home with dogs her size. However, she is a very smart, eager-to-please puppy, and she corrects easily. She loves people and she loves to play with other dogs. At this time, Misty is uncomfortable around little kids, but she is fine with older kids and teenagers. Misty can clear a 4ft fence and will need vigilant owners (a 6ft fence is preferred).

Like all German Shepherd puppies, Misty will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.

Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
