German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Rocky
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $375
Species: Dog
Current Age: 8 Years 11 Months (best estimate)
Rocky is a sweet, super handsome approx 10 month-old pup whom we rescued from a reservation in SD. Reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die young due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness among other causes. We are so glad that we were able to help him!
Rocky loves to follow foster mom around. He loves to hide his toys in his bed and gives sweet puppy kisses. He is funny, full of energy, and adorable when he playfully hops around like a bunny to get others to play with him. He absolutely loves to run around in the backyard, always carrying a toy in his mouth. Rocky is friendly and playful with other dogs.
Rocky is great with kids and is best friends with the 1 year old in his foster home. In fact, they cuddle as they watch morning cartoons together. Rocky is still all puppy, with lots of energy and playfulness, and he will benefit from an active home. He is a typical puppy, and he will need his new parents to continue working with him on not jumping up on counters, leash-walking and not mouthing when he plays.
Foster mom tells us that Rocky is a lover but he's also every alert: "He's very aware of even the slightest noise. He doesn't bark much, but his ears get pretty stiff and he stands in the most beautiful stance I've ever seen!" Rocky is a very handsome, sweet, and endearing puppy who will be the delight of his furever family.
Like all German Shepherd and German Shepherd mix puppies, Rocky will need a plenty of activity, socialization, boundaries, consistency and leadership in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
