German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About LeeLa *Molly's Puppy*. New name: Bentley

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $425
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 8 Years 5 Months (best estimate)

LeeLa is an approx 3 month-old girl puppy, who was living as a stray with her mom and littermates in a small rural area where many dogs are dumped. A good Samaritan took pity on them and worked very hard to find rescue for mom and puppies.

Our awesome volunteers drove all night and day to this little family's rescue. By the time they arrived back in Omaha, the pups were pretty sick: 3 of them had to be hospitalized for a few days, they all had severe intestinal parasite infestation, had various skin conditions (mange, open sores), and they all required several rounds of antibiotics. We are glad that we got them in the nick off time! In between great vet care, and all the TLC they received in their foster home, they all pulled through and are now thriving!

LeeLA is a strong, powerful girl, with  beautiful markings. She is one of the largest in the litter, and she thinks she is in charge, making the others respect her space, and telling them when it's time to play! Yet, she is gentle and will roll over on her back to let the smallest play on top of her.  She is irrresistible to pet and cuddle with, with her calm, gentle demeanor, and super soft fur!

Like all German Shepherd and German Shepherd mix puppies, LeeLa will need a lot of activity, socialization, boundaries, consistency and leadership in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.

Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
