German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation. 

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. Kya is a young, petite, girl who was heavily pregnant when we rescued her from a reservation in SD in early fall. Reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die young due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness among other causes. After Kya came into rescue with us she had 3 adorable puppies. We are so glad that we were able to help sweet Kya and her little family!

At only about a 1 ½ years-old, Kya is just past the puppy stage herself! She LOVES people, including the little kids who live in her foster house. She enjoys other dogs and finds comfort in being around them. She hasn't been around cats. Kya is doing really well with potty-training. She is starting to play with toys and really likes chew bones! Kya is still learning manners, such as sit, and how not get into into the garbage (but when you are a stray, you have to find food where you can!). Her foster mom says she gets scared when closed in with a baby gate and doesn't like to be away from her people or her foster siblings. But she does fine with free-roam of the house when her foster parents aren’t there. Kya is a petite girl who enjoys to cuddle in your lap :).
