German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Gracie
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $400
Species: Dog
Current Age: 8 Years 10 Months (best estimate)
Gracie is a gorgeous, friendly, very sweet, approx 8 month-old girl who was picked up as a stray in a small rural community in MO where dogs are often abandoned.
Gracie is sweet and snuggly. She is a little shy at first, but she warms up fairly quickly. Gracie really loves attention and spending time with her people, and she loves to be petted. Belly rubs are one of her favorite things! In fact, she will roll over onto her back almost immediately when you start to pet her, to make sure you get the right spot :). She likes meeting new people, and doesn’t shy away from strangers. Like many Shepherds, she is a velcro pup who wants nothing more than to be with her humans and likes to follow them everywhere around the house, and sleep next to them at night. Gracie does really well with the kids in her foster home (ages 9 & 11).
Gracie is full of energy and loves to run! She also gets along very well with other dogs and would love to have a dog buddy in her new home. Gracie loves spending time with the the youngest dog in her foster home: they routinely share the same bed; they love going in the backyard and running and playing together; one of her foster siblings, a Collie loves trying to herd her, but Gracie is just way too fast to be contained :)
Gracie is still a puppy, so good supervision and keeping her well-supplied with antlers and other chewies is important, to keep her from chewing on inappropriate items.
Gracie is a super sweet, gentle, active girl, who will make a wonderful family pet for a very lucky adopter!
