German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Micco *Koda/Denver/Micco litter*. New name: Jax
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $425
Species: Dog
Current Age: 8 Years 4 Months (best estimate)
Micco is an adorable 3 month-old boy puppy, who up until rescue lived as a stray on the reservation. Reservation dogs lead a very hard life with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die young due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness among other causes. We are so glad that we were able to help Micco!
Micco Grey is a typical puppy who is full of energy. He is very brave and sweet! Micco has been going up and down stairs since day one at 7 weeks old. He loves his humans' attention, affection, and belly rubs. His foster mom says, "He was a shy boy initially, but quickly came out of his shell and loves to play with his big German Shepherd Foster sister." Micco also loves to play tug, fetch, and frisbee. He also enjoys just being outside crawling around in the grass looking for bugs. He loves chewing his bones, and is very excited for his meals. His favorite thing to do is play hide and seek on the stairs. He is doing great with potty training. Micco loves his kennel and sleeps through the night! It's his little "den". His foster mom also says, "Micco Grey is working on a proper sit, and does it like a prince. He's been on a few short walks and does well on a leash. This Prince Charming has a lot of energy and loves to play!"
Like all German Shepherd and German Shepherd mix puppies, Micco will need a lot of activity, socialization, boundaries, consistency and leadership in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
