German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Hans. New name: Scout
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
Current Age: 14 Years 1 Month (best estimate)
Hans is a super cute, sweet, shy 6 y.o. boy whom we were able to rescue from a high-kill shelter in California, thanks to the amazing Miracle GSD Network. Hans, who was extremely scared in the shelter environment, and was in real danger at the shelter, is quite fabulous in just about any other setting! He is great with people, kids, and other dogs. He is currently learning to respect the kitties in his foster home.
Hans can be a bit shy at first, but he quickly warms up. He is a fun, delighful, very affectionate boy. He is playful but gentle. And a real cuddler and lover. He has plenty of energy for walks and runs. And he is just as happy to relax and cuddle up with you. Belly rubs are one of his favorite things! He loves to play with his stuffed animals and his squeaky balls. Hans listens well, he comes when called, he knows "sit", "down", "no", and he is currently working on "stay". He is smart, and eager to please and learn new things.
Hans could not be sweeter or more delightful. He will make a lucky adopter very, very happy with his loyalty, energy, fun personality, happy & cheerful demeanor, and his snuggly and loving temperament!
