German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Fritz

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 9 Years 11 Months (best estimate)
Fritz is a gorgeous young boy who found himself in need of rescue after his owner had to go into a nursing home. He has adjusted very well to life in his foster home and he is ready for a forever home of his own!

Fritz is the perfect, loyal companion for a moderately experienced owner, looking for a best friend, walk buddy, and someone to cuddle with on rainy days! He loves to run and play in the backyard, he loves to go everywhere with his humans, and he is a very fun, loving, playful boy who is still all puppy!

This is what Fritz's awesome foster mom tells us about this sweet, gorgeous boy: "He's still got the playful pup in him and he's a big boy, so there are lots of laughs seeing him run around and figure those legs out! He's eager to meet new people and instantly goes in for some hugs. He's great with people and large dogs with proper and slow introductions. His prey drive is pretty high, so would probably best be suited in a house without small dogs and/or cats. His new best bud Max and him could play for hours! He's getting better everyday on our walks and looks forward to them everyday! He is a GSD so needs to have those walks and someone willing to work with him, but he's got a great off switch and always ready to cuddle up and watch tv too! And guys...he truly gets into his TV! Today it was the dog show and the Super Bowl :). He loves to get out and go on adventures in the car! He's pretty excitable, but with some work and showing him the proper way to be, he’ll be great in the car! We’ve been working on his recall and waiting at doors and proper manners and he is catching on quickly! He knows, sit, down, heel and he's working on come."

While Fritz is a fantastic, friendly dog, like many young Shepherds without prior training, Fritz needs to continue working on his excitability, not mouthing and not jumping up. Because of that, and his large size, we are looking for a fit, active, committed adopter with prior GSD experience, and older kids.
