German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Millie. New name: Penelope

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $425
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 7 Years 10 Months (best estimate)

Millie is an extremely fluffy, gorgeous 11 week-old puppy who was living as a stray on a reservation in SD. Millie was born with a deformity on her right leg, where it is curved inwards. Millie has had a vet consult with x-rays, and no treatment is indicated at this time, as this is not something that can be "fixed".

Millie is just a little bit different from other dogs, and that is not a bad thing, as she is a super cute, fun, lovable girl that everyone falls in love with! Millie still uses that leg for support, to grab things, and to give you hugs, and it's not painful to her, or in her way at all. When she runs, she runs on her other 3 legs, and while she limps, she is just as playful and active as any other dog. She is a sweet, cuddly, active pup, who is just as gorgeous and fluffy as they come!  Millie loves people, other dogs, discovering new things, and she even enjoys playing dress up :)

Like all German Shepherd and other herding breed puppies, Millie will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
