German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Amina *Evan/Amina/Guthrie Litter*.New name: Ellie
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $375
Species: Dog
Current Age: 6 Years 7 Months (best estimate)
Adorable little Amina, and her siblings Guthrie and Evan, were rescued from a reservation in SD. Life on the reservation is tough for the many stray dogs that live there, but summer is especially hard. Along with the usual lack of shelter, food/water or medical care, the oppressive heat, and tick/flea season make summer conditions unbearable for the many dogs that are trying to fend for themselves on the Rez. Amina is among one of the very lucky pups that she was able to leave that life behind, when she was rescued. Now all she needs is a furever home!
Amina is a sweet, pretty calm and clever puppy that is happy playing with the dogs in her foster home or cuddling on the couch with a bone to chew. Amina is approximately 3 months old, and appears to be mixed with Border Collie and Heeler. Amina is so cute! The tip of her tail is white and looks like a beacon when she wags her tail! She is so sweet in the morning wanting to be held and cuddled. She loves any toy that rolls around so she can chase it. She loves people, kids, and all animals. She is doing well with house-training. Amina already knows "sit" and is very food-motivated. She will happily go to her crate when a treat is offered!
Amina is an awesome puppy who is looking for an active adopter who is able to provide daily walks in addition to backyard playtime, outings for socialization, and the usual training (positive reinforcement training) that puppies and youngsters require.
Amina's adoption fee is $375, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
Evan appears to be an Australian Cattle Dog (aka Heeler) mix. Like all German Shepherd Dogs, Border Collies, Australian Cattle Dogs, and other herding breed mixes that we have in rescue, Amina will need training consistency, boundaries, and plenty of activity and socialization.Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his leash skills, manners, and social skills. Our breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
