German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Adelaide

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 10 Years (best estimate)
Adelaide (Addy) is a stunning 2 and 1/2 y.o. girl who recently found herself in need of rescue, after her owners could no longer care for her. She is sweet, good with people, does fine with other mellow dogs with slow introductions, and she is good with cats.

Addy loves to run around with a tennis ball in her mouth and has a favorite teddy bear that she likes to sleep with. She listens very well and knows sit, shake, leave it, kennel, and come. She is very loyal, alert, and loving, and like most Shepherds, she loves to follow her humans everywhere, even when inside the house :).

Addy enjoys walks, car rides, and spending time with her humans. Adelaide came to us with a suspected ACL injury. After an orthopedic consult, we learned that Adelaide appears to have a torn right CCL and signs of early CCL tearing of her left side . While surgery doesn’t seem to be indicated at this time (she is pain-free and appears to move, walk, run, without any restrictions), there’s a good chance that Adelaide may require surgery at some point, possibly when the left CCL fully tears, at which point, they could possibly clean the right side a bit too. If she ends up needing this surgery, it is estimated that it could cost between $3,000 and $3,500.
