German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Keegan *Ziva's puppy*. New name: Riley
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $395
Species: Dog
Current Age: 7 Years 8 Months (best estimate)
Keegan is an adorable 11 week-old boy puppy who born in rescue with HUGS. When Keegan's mom, Ziva arrived into rescue with us, little did we know that she would be heavily pregnant, as no one on the reservation had noticed it. Our vet confirmed it with an ultrasound the next day, and only a few days later, Ziva delivered a litter of adorable babies! They were born 3-14-17 so they became our "Saint Patrick's Litter"!
We are glad that Ziva came into rescue when she did. Reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die on the Reservation due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness among other causes. Ziva and her pups truly share the luck of the Irish ;). She made it into rescue only days before delivering and they are now all thriving and ready for their forever homes!
Keegan is a sweet and spunky, super handsome boy, who loves to snuggle. He enjoys playing with all sorts of toys. He gives lots of kisses and loves a good belly rub! Keegan loves people and playing with other dogs. Keegan also loves his food! Like many puppies, Keegan loves to play non-stop when he is awake, and then he also likes to nap hard while he replenishes his energy! K
eegan is doing great with his leash-walking and loves his daily walks. He loves chew toys. He already knows "sit" and is working on "down". He is doing great with potty-training, and if you take him outside he will potty almost every time. He loves running around in the back yard. Foster mom describes him as a very athletic, very sweet, very smart puppy, who loves his humans!
Keegan is super handsome and affectionate, very smart and eager to please, and we think there's a good chance he might be a big boy!
Like all German Shepherd and German Shepherd mix puppies, Keegan will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
