German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Delancey *Puppy*
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $375
Species: Dog
Current Age: 7 Years 10 Months (best estimate)
Delancey is a sweet, 7 month-old girl who came to HUGS with a serious tick infestation and in dire need of medical attention. She had difficulty walking and standing, and had to be carried. In Delancey’s first five hours as a HUGS dog, she had six seizures, and her previous owner reported that she had been having daily seizures before that. Delancey spent the first 48 hours with us hospitalized and sedated at the Urgent Pet Care clinic, getting treatment for infected lacerations on her paws, as emergency personnel tried to stabilize her and bring her seizures under control. Thanks to prompt emergency veterinary care, Delancey survived and is now beginning to thrive in her foster home! We are glad to report that she has not had any seizures since her initial hospitalization a month ago. She now walks, runs, and plays with the other dogs in her foster home!
Delancey started taking anti-epileptic medication twice each day upon arrival, but she has now been entirely weaned off of it, and she has been seizure-free since 4/30/17, which is the day after she arrived. Delancey loves anyone and everyone, dogs and humans alike. Delancey is crate trained and she doesn’t just walk to her crate at meal time – she sprints across the house to get into her crate for meals! Like a typical puppy, Delancey loves to play, and would be great in a home with another dog. She currently lives with two GSDs, and tries to get them to play with her non-stop. Delancey is also learning to occupy herself with toys, with Nylabones and durable stuffed toys being her favorites.
As a puppy, Delancey is still learning her boundaries, and needs a home with consistent gentle correction for her puppy behaviors (like mouthing). Like all German Shepherd puppies, Delancey will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog. When Delancey arrived, she seemed to have missed out on some of the normal learning and development that would have occurred for a puppy her age, possibly due to the poor quality of life before coming into HUGS. However, with love and patience, she has bloomed in her foster home, and expect that she will continue to catch up and reach her full potential as she grows :). In the beginning, Delancey was a little slower at picking up on training, as well as cues from other dogs. However, she has made huge strides. She now functions as a perfectly normal dog and she is very interactive, affectionate and lovable, and not to mention adorable! Delancey is without a doubt, one of the sweetest, happiest puppies we have ever met. This little cutie is clearly grateful for her new lease on life and ready to enjoy it to the fullest!
Like all German Shepherd puppies, Delancey will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
