Royce. New name: Reece needs a caretaker or foster!
Won't you consider helping him get a new start?
German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Royce. New name: Reece
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
Current Age: 9 Years 3 Months (best estimate)
Royce is a handsome 2 year-old boy who found himself in need of rescue, when his owner passed away. Royce has a very sweet, goofy, and shy personality. He has excellent manners, doesn't bark, and absolutely loves playing with other dogs. Royce is very gentle, but shy and timid, and just learning to trust in humans and to come to them for love and affection. While he's still shy, Royce is starting to come out of his shell :). Royce would probably do best in a home with another dog, as he very much enjoys their company and learning from them. He does well with his alpha dog foster sister and brother and lets them run the show.
Royce is house-trained, as long as you give him appropriate potty breaks, kennel-trained, and learning how to walk on a leash with confidence. His favorite activities include playing in the kiddie pool, lounging in the sun, and bouncing around the backyard with his dog pals.
Royce is looking for a kind, patient pet parent who will not rush him, and who will allow him to adjust to his new home and surroundings, at his own pace. Shy, timid, and fearful dogs require extra time and space, especially in the beginning, but few things are as rewarding as watching them blossom, as they gain confidence and learn to trust. They tend to make wonderful, affectionate, very loyal pets once they come out of their shell. And we think that Royce will make an exceptional companion for the very lucky adopter who takes a chance on him!
Like all German Shepherd dogs and puppies, Royce will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
