German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Baron *Puppy* Paris' Litter. New name: Hondo
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $375
Species: Dog
Current Age: 7 Years 4 Months (best estimate)
We recently rescued Paris, a very sweet and gorgeous girl who appears to be a German Shepherd Dog mix, from a SD reservation. Paris arrived with her 6 adorable puppies, including Baron. This little family was very lucky to come into rescue when they did. Reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die on the Reservation due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness among other causes. Fortunately, Paris and her puppies are now safe, and they will get to experience life as beloved family pets.
Baron is a 9 week-old puppy who is smart, spunky, and outgoing. He does well in both his crate and puppy playpen, and is doing well with potty-training. He has lots of energy, loves his rope toys, and he loves to snuggle up next to you for a nap. Baron loves to run around in the backyard and play-wrestle with the other dog in the household. He recently learned to do stairs, and he is doing great learning "sit" and "come". He is very playful and food-motivated. He loves to play tug-o-war with his toys! Baron can settle down for short periods of time, and he will cuddle at nap time :). Baron is vocal and confident, but so sweet and LOVES being told he is a "good boy".
Like all German Shepherd Dogs, Australian Cattle Dogs, and other herding breed mixes that we have in rescue, Baron will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
