German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Trace *Miracle Dog*
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $225
Species: Dog
Current Age: 15 Years 2 Months (best estimate)
Trace is a super handsome, adorably goofy young boy, who landed as a stray in a very high-kill shelter in Southern California. Trace was in pretty bad shape, very skinny, with chronic ear infections, and a badly broken, infected tooth. Trace surely wouldn't have made it out alive, but thanks to our friends from the amazing Miracle GSD Network, we were able to spring him out and bring him into rescue with us. Trace is about 8 y.o., very sweet and lovable, and a fast-learner.
Despite clearly having lived a prior sad life of neglect, Trace is a very sweet and happy boy. He quickly became potty and house-trained. He’s a great guy, who is smart as a whip, and loves being in his foster home. Trace is a delighful boy who likes people and who gets along well with other dogs. He loves chew toys and rolling around on his dog bed. He LOVES his food! He relaxes very quickly and is very sweet and gentle. He has a playful nature and as he gains weight and strength it will likely come out more. He is great with other dogs after slow introductions. He is an all-around great pup! Did you know that seniors make wonderful companions? They are as lovable as their younger counterparts, if not even more: they are often calmer, better behaved, and require a lot less exercise and activity ;)
If you are willing to give this amazing boy a second chance in his golden years, he will reward you with much love, loyalty, fun and fond-memories! He still has plenty of love, spirit, and life to share with his new family.
Like all German Shepherd Dogs, Australian Cattle Dogs, and other herding breed mixes that we have in rescue, Trace will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
