German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Grayson
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
Current Size: 74 Pounds
Current Age: 10 Years 4 Months (best estimate)
Grayson is an incredibly sweet, almost 4 y.o., friendly German Shepherd, who gets very excited by changes in scenery and meeting new people, but quickly calms down. He knows lots of commands, including "sit", "wait", "down", "stay", "shake", and more. He is very playful with both humans and other dogs. Grayson is big, friendly, and lovable. Because of his strength and enthusiasm, he would be best suited around teens and older children. Grayson is very in tune with the dogs around him, and takes his cues from them, so he does best with other friendly, well-behaved dogs. Grayson likes to play fetch, tug-o-war, and he is hilarious and adorable when he plays with his toys, which he likes to toss around, and prance around with. He is a very enthusiastic player! Grayson is very treat-motivated, he loves to play in the water, and he is an all-around super fun, interactive dog, who would be the delight of any active, GSD-lover. Grayson gets very excited on car rides, but walks well on a leash, he is crate and potty-trained, and he is very eager-to-please. Grayson is sweet, confident, and so much fun! Grayson is a wonderful companion, and a very loyal boy who will be glued to your side and ready to "assist" in whatever you're doing - be that cleaning, baking, yardwork, or going on adventures!
It's very important for GSDs to be on a high-quality diet, as they are prone to GI upsets, skin issues and allergies, and food sensitivities. This is especially important for Grayson, who like many GSDs can get itchy and develop hot spots. Grayson is currrently doing great on a natural diet of Honest Kitchen and beef, with some supplements and fish oil. This has really helped Grayson's skin and coat improve, and we'd really like for him to continue on a similar diet, and to continue to be followed up for his allergies as needed.
Grayson is a wonderful GSD who will excel with active adopters who are able to provide daily walks in addition to backyard playtime, outings for socialization, and the usual training (positive reinforcement training) that GSDs require. Because of that, Grayson's ideal owner will have prior GSD experience.
Grayson's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
Like all German Shepherds, Grayson will need training (positive reinforcement training), consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. Our dogs make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
