German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Sherlock *Shiloh's Puppy*. New name: Shepp
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $375
Species: Dog
Current Age: 7 Years 2 Months (best estimate)
We recently rescued Shiloh from a SD reservation. Shiloh arrived into rescue with her eight adorable puppies, including Sherlock. The little family was very lucky to come into rescue when they did - reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die on the reservation due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness, among other causes. In fact, poor Shiloh was extremely weak and undernourished when she arrived. Fortunately, Shiloh and puppies, including Sherlock, are now safe, fully recovered, and ready to experience life as beloved family pets.
Sherlock is a 9 week-old adorable, handsome young pup who, as his name suggests, is always investigating and exploring! He likes his outside yard time! Sherlock has an easy-going personality; he loves to snuggle with his humans and play with his big dog playmates. Sherlock is super smart and has adapted quickly to a schedule of eat, sleep, play – repeat! He is really good in his crate at night as long as he has a snuggly toy with him. Sherlock is rockin’ it with his potty training too – little bladder means lots of visits outside. He knows to hold #2 until the next visit out – and his humans know to take him outside soon after each meal. He currently likes to eat 4 small meals per day as he is a growing pup with a small tummy. Sherlock will be an energetic, loyal companion.
Like all German Shepherd Dogs, Australian Cattle Dogs, and other herding breed mixes that we have in rescue, Sherlock will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
