German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Russia *Miracle Dog*. New name: Lady
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
Current Age: 8 Years 10 Months (best estimate)
Russia is a totally adorable 2 year-old girl, who ended up at a very high-kill shelter in Southern California, during the dreadful Christmas Dump. Poor Russia was absolutely terrified in the shelter environment, which unfortunately, placed her at risk of being euthanized. Thanks to the amazing Miracle GSD Network, we were able to pull her to safety before it was too late. As soon as she was out of the shelter, Russia immediately warmed up and thrived in her foster home.
Russia is an absolutely lovely companion who gives great kisses. She's affectionate, loves to lean against you and be touched. She loves to be brushed and cuddled with. Russia is a love-bug! She purrs like a kitten when petted, and if allowed, she loves, loves, loves to lounge on furniture. Russia loves snow, but most of all, she just wants to hang by your side, and if you sit down, she will tuck right in next to you.
Russia's favorite exercise is going for long walks! Russia walks well on a leash, she rides very well in the car, she is crate and potty-trained, she is very smart, and an excellent listener. Russia is beautifully behaved in public, but like many GSDs, she would not enjoy being petted by strangers. This is pretty common, as many German Shepherds are NOT fans of being approached and petted by strangers. They are smart dogs that often require a certain level of familiarity and trust before they can feel comfortable with that type of interaction. This is especially true of adorable Russia :). Russia could benefit from a confident handler who will continue to socialize her in public while making sure strangers respect her space, and provide fun, positive experiences to help her continue to gain confidence.
This is what Russia's awesome foster mom has to say about her: "Russia does all the things a smart, good dog would do: she listens very well, tags along super closely, checks in and listens hard to every word you say, and scoots in as close as she can to cuddle with her people. Her house manners are impeccable, she craves closeness and wants to be a part of whatever you are doing: yard work, running errands, watching TV. Being in her company is both a relaxing and fun experience, as Russia exudes peace and happiness."
Russia is a people dog, and craves the companionship of her humans. She is not playful with other dogs and would be perfectly content as an only dog. Russia needs slow, managed introductions to new people in her home. A quieter home without a lot of different people going in and out would be best for this sweet girl.
Russia is a fantastic companion that does not require a lot of exercise. She would be a great fit for either an experienced or a first-time GSD owner.
Like all German Shepherds and other herding breeds that we have in rescue, Russia will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization. Our dogs make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills
