German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Ivy
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
Current Size: 69 Pounds
Current Age: 8 Years 1 Month (best estimate)
Ivy is a gorgeous young girl (1 yr 11 months), and a typical energetic youngster, full of enthusiasm and playfulness.
She is adorably sassy, very smart and loves to learn new things. In fact, Ivy is a quick-learner and is very eager to please. She is crate-trained and potty-trained. She knows "sit", "down", "shake", "kennel", and even "bedtime". Her favorite thing to do is play with the other playful dogs in her foster home. Ivy loves other dogs and would go right into playing with every dog that she meets! However, because she is such an enthusiastic, hands-on player, and doesn't always take cues when other dogs are not in the mood to play, she would probably do best with equally playful, non-dominant dogs, who are tolerant of other dogs in their space. Ivy also loves toys, especially stuffless animals, and works really hard on trying to get the squeaker out!
Ivy is always excited to see you when you get home and is full of lovings. Even though she is not necessarily a big cuddler, when she wants attention she will jump right up to your lap and roll over for some belly rubs! Ivy loves to talk and will tell you all about it if you let her. She is a sweetheart who can be a bit of a goof. Ivy is simply adorable!
Ivy will need an active, experienced owner who will continue to work on her socialization and training. She has lots of energy, loves to be on the go, and would love to be someone's running or jogging partner.
Ivy's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
