German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Vittoria *Capri's Puppy*. New name: Koa
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $375
Species: Dog
Current Age: 6 Years 10 Months (best estimate)
Capri and her 6 puppies, including Vittoria, were recently rescued from a SD reservation. Reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die on the reservation due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness, among other causes. Fortunately for this little family, they got out safely, and they will now get to experience life as beloved family pets.
Vittoria is an adorable 7-week-old girl. She is active, independent, she loves chewing on her toys, and she loves playing with the bigger dogs in the household! She is learning to do stairs: she has now mastered going up the stairs but sometimes gets a little nervous going down them. She loves belly rubs and to cuddle. She is doing well with potty-training. She is a great little girl with plenty of personality :).
She is one of Capri's puppies, and she will be available for adoption when she turns 8 weeks old, on or after 3-12-18. Applications are being taken now.
Vittoria is a wonderful puppy, who would be an excellent fit for an active adopter who is excited about training, socializing, and being active with an absolutely fabulous pup!
We do not know what Capri's puppies are mixed with. Our best guess is that they are herding breed mixes. These adorable pups will make great additions to active families that will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart pups who will need leadership, and plenty of activity and mental stimulation. This is true of all of the breeds that we rescue :).
Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
