German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Corbin (New name: Dexter)
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $425
Species: Dog
Current Size: 34 Pounds
Current Age: 6 Years 7 Months (best estimate)
Corbin is a gorgeous 5 month-old puppy. He can be a little timid at first, but once he warms up and gets comfortable, he is the sweetest boy and wants all the love and cuddles!
When poor Corbin arrived into rescue, he was very timid, undersocialized, had been spending way too much time in crate, and he was not potty-trained. After only a few weeks of love, structure, and learning the ropes from the other dogs in his foster home, Corbin's come out of his shell and is more confident every day . Corbin is a big teddy bear who likes to take his time getting comfortable in his surroundings. Once he gets to know you though, his personality really shines and he LOVES being around his humans and the other dogs.
Everything is new to Corbin. He is currently working on basic commands (and has fully mastered "sit"). He is doing well on a leash, can tolerate car rides, he is now fully potty-trained, and does really well in his kennel. He really enjoys chew toys, squeaky toys, and playing tug-o-war. He also loves to follow the other household dogs around (aka his doggy mentors) and doing whatever they are doing! Corbin is the biggest sweetheart and it is easy to see that he really wants to please his humans.
Corbin is looking for an active pet parent who will not rush him, who will allow extra time as Corbin adjusts to his new home, and who will continue to provide gentle, patient socialization. We would love for Corbin to have a playful dog buddy in his forever home: not only does he love canine companionship, it also boosts his confidence and helps him come out of his shell a lot faster!
Corbin's adoption fee is $425, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives.Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
Corbin is a wonderful puppy who will be the delight of an active, GSD-loving owner. Like all German Shepherds and other herding breeds that we have in rescue, Corbin will need training (positive reinforcement training), consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization. Because of that, he will need an active, experienced GSD owner. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. Our dogs make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
