German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Adrien. New name: Ozzie
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
Current Size: 76 Pounds
Current Age: 7 Years 10 Months (best estimate)
Adrien is a handsome, shy boy who was rescued from a crowded kill shelter in Oklahoma.
Adrien is a young adult who is very sweet and loyal. He loves to be at your feet, and give you kisses any chance that he gets! He is a lovely companion who is smart, treat-motivated, he loves rope toys and balls, and likes to fetch. He is playful once he knows you, but also loves to just lay by you and get his neck scratched, and have you hold his paw! Adrien is potty-trained, crate-trained, he's a tad shy but loves people, going for walks, and is simply an adorable boy! He is good with dogs (big and small) with slow introductions. Adrien is very intuitive and if he senses someone is scared of dogs he is extra gentle and doesn't jump up on them, just sweetly licks their hand. He is a remarkable boy who is looking for an active, experienced owner who will continue to work on his socialization and training.
Adrien's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped. Learn more about the adoption process and requirements, and apply at: http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption.
Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
