German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Jasper. New name Ryder

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $425
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Size: 40 Pounds
  • Current Age: 5 Years (best estimate)
Jasper and his brother Leo were rescued from a high-kill shelter in Oklahoma. They were both sick with an upper respiratory infection that turned into pneumonia, and they required weeks of care and hospitalization before they were ready to travel our way. Luckily, they are both fully recovered, healthy, and ready for each find a forever home of their own!

Jasper is an incredibly cute 6 month-old GSD puppy! Jasper is a typical GSD puppy. He can be very sweet and cuddly (on his own terms) but also mouthy and sassy! He redirects fairly well, and he's learning which are the appropriate objects that he can chew on. Jasper likes to push boundaries to see what he can and cannot get away with. He absolutely loves playing with the other dogs in his foster home and we would love for Jasper to have a dog buddy in his forever home. He has a lot of energy and will require an active home: he plays for hours every day with one of the younger Shepherds in his foster home, goes for daily walks, and needs plenty of stimulation (and good supervision). He likes playing ball with foster mom. He loves antlers, bones, rope toys, stuffed toys, and crinkly toys. He is doing well with crate-training, he is potty trained, and walks well on a leash. He is still a bit nervous in the car, but is learning to become more comfortable, and it definitely helps him when he has a dog buddy along. He knows sit and is also working on being more quiet (he can be a little vocal and barky when excited). He is adorable, incredibly sweet, full of sass, and just a little shy in the beginning until he gets to know you, but very friendly as soon as he warms up (which is fairly quickly!). He is extremely charming!

Like all GSD puppies, Jasper requires constant direct supervision. Jasper's ideal home will be an experienced household with strong leadership skills and structure, and prior GSD ownership, and a playful dog buddy for Jasper. Jasper is very young and does need the proper socialization, training, and guidance to become a well-rounded adult. He is strong and mighty and requires patience, positive reinforcement and redirection to channel his energy in appropriate ways. Like any of our dogs, adorable Jasper will make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, activity and mental stimulation that his breed requires. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.

Jasper's adoption fee is $425, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped.
