Login to Remember your Favorite Animals and Breeds!

German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

"Hi everyone! Foster mom wanted me to share a little bit about myself, because I'm just a such a HUGE lovable guy that everyone just adores! These are a few things I would love in my new home: #1) Attention... want can I say? I'm a needy guy and I LOVE human affection. The more the better! I follow everyone around in my foster family. I like to rest my big head on everyone, or lean on you… and if you let me, I'll just get in your lap. I'm the perfect lap dog, but foster mom says something about being too big for that? I mean, I am 100lbs of love, and mom says I’m a little clumsy whatever that means…maybe I’m still growing into my paws! #2) A little extra room… because I’m 100lbs of love, fur and some slobber, I do take up room and I do like to spread out, especially on the bed if you let me. I’m ALL about snuggling. If you are looking for a super snuggly kind of guy, I’m your dog. #3) An easy-going dog buddy. I'm very sweet, love other dogs, and play nicely. My furry foster sister Gigi (also a HUGS dog) is teaching me the ropes, but she’s a little older and kinda bossy and set in her ways and she will growl at me if she’s “in a mood”. Not sure how anyone would not love me since I’m such an easy-going, smiley guy! Foster mom thinks it would be nice for me to have a more fun, laid-back dog in my forever home, who will want to play with me, and help me build my confidence! 4) Someone who is home a lot. Since I spent so much time in a crate in my past life, I’m all about freedom and following everyone around. Don’t get me wrong, I’m great in a crate when foster mom/dad leave for short periods of time. And I have been sleeping in my crate a night (I walk right in), but I think I convinced foster mom to leave me out at night, as I like to sleep next to her bed on the floor or a big dog bed. She said we can try it this week!

I am a sweet, fun, smart guy, and a velcro pup, who in typical Shepherd fashion would like to be your personal shadow! I even love to go on car rides and get "Scooby Snacks" (
ice cream)! Ok so some of the things I’m working on with foster mom include manners. I know sit, down, shake, stay and I'm working on “leave it”, but with my size I’m a little we could say…pushy? I would love someone to take me to doggie classes, cuz foster mom says I’m super smart and catch on really quick to everything. I don’t counter surf (although with my size I easily could!), and I don’t get into anything I’m not supposed to. I don’t eat socks and don’t chew on anything but my toys (which I love). See what a great dog I am? Foster mom even “vacuums me” with the little vacuum attachment. I love that, and just fall over belly up for that! I need 1-2 walks a day, plus some playtime in the backyard with you or a doggy friend, and then I'm ready for a nap.  Oh, I do have to say I am a messy drinker. In full disclosure I drink A LOT of water and tend to dribble afterward, so as long as you are ok with a big mat under my bowl everything is cool. So that’s pretty much it. I’m a BIG, easy-going kind of guy that needs a lot of attention, room and petting. I just LOVE snuggling up to foster mom as she pets me and tells me how handsome I am. I just eat that up! I would do best with someone who is home a lot and who does have a playful laid-back buddy for me. So if you think I’d be a good fit for your family contact HUGS! Love, Scooby!"

Like any of our dogs, this gorgeous boy would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that this breed needs. Because of that, Scooby's ideal owner will have prior GSD herding breed experience. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.

Scooby's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
