German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation. 

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Josie is a beautiful, playful, 2.5 year-old German Shepherd female. Josie is great with other dogs. She can be a bit fearful until she gets to know people. She needs to be treated with patience and given her space, until she trusts you. Once she does, she is all cuddles, playfulness and kisses!

Josie is very smart, sweet and loyal. Josie needs people to let her come to them. She may get spooked if someone tries grabbing her collar suddenly (she's clearly been hit in the past and this is something that scares her). She also becomes alarmed if someone tries to push her into being loving or letting herself be petted, before she is ready. This is counterproductive and only increases her fear and discomfort. However, if you give her time and space, she will surprise you by increasingly giving you her trust and affection in a matter of days!

Josie needs pet parents who will continue to gently but consistently socialize her and help her become more confident. Until Josie overcomes her fears, if she ever does, her pet parents would need to educate & watch any guests/visitors on how to properly approach Josie (basically by ignoring her, until she's used to them and she trusts them). Josie is a very sweet and smart girl. Once she knows a person and that they don't mean her any harm, she is utterly loving and delightful. 

Josie loves car rides, toys, walks, treats, other doggies, going out and about the town, people as soon as she knows them, and being active. Josie is ready for patient pet parents who will be willing to give her the time and space that she needs to become comfortable in her new surroundings. And who will continue to socialize and train her so she can blossom into the gorgeously confident girl that she can be :). Josie has tremendous potential in the right hands and is sure to become the pride and joy of her new family!
