German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Aida * Tripod *

Species: Dog

Location: Springfield, NE
Aida is an approx 1 y.o. girl who ended up a stray at a high-kill shelter. We were able to rescue her thanks to our friends at Miracle GSD Network. As soon as Aida got off the transport van, it became apparent that something was wrong with her left front leg, which looked crooked, swollen, deformed and she frequently held it up, dangling. Our vet x-ray'd it and diagnosed her with a severe, chronic dislocation of the left elbow, likely due to an untreated old fracture. We sent Aida to K-State Vet Hospital for an orthopedic specialist consult and obtained additional opinions. Unfortunately, because Aida's injury is old and the joint had already fused in the abnormal position, joint arthrodesis (repair surgery) was not recommended due to poor prognosis (low chances of success, with high risk of complications), leaving amputation as the only viable option to improve her quality of life.
Young Aida is a very sweet and loving girl. She loves to cuddle with people. She is velcro pup who follows her people around and loves to be right next to them.
Prior to surgery, Aida was on pain medication to help keep her comfortable, but even short walks made Aida's left joint swell and hurt. Aida had about a 20% use of her left leg, and when she did use it, it was with painful consequences that left it more swollen and caused her to guard it, lick it, and hold it up in pain. Since surgical repair was not an option, our vet recently amputated Aida's painful, mostly useless limb. Aida has recovered extremely well from her surgery and is already showing remarkable improvement in her mobility and quality of life! Indeed, tripods most often lead very full, active lives, run and do just about anything just like other dogs.
Aida is fabulous with people including kids. Aida loves little kids and adores giving them kisses, and being petted by them non-stop! She loves to cuddle. She also loves to go to work with her foster mom, and will sit beside her desk for hours at a time. Aida gets along with other dogs and cats, but she is not playful with them, and prefers the company of humans. Aida is still learning to play with toys. She absolutely loves to run in the backyard. She is very fast and the fact that she has 3 legs does not slow her down one bit! Aida loves short walks. Aida will currently not do stairs. She would do best in a Ranch home. Aida is fully potty-trained and mostly crate-trained. However, she does have separation-anxiety when left alone, and would be best with someone who is home a lot. Aida is a wonderful all-around girl! This sweet, fun, friendly young girl will be an excellent addition to any loving, attentive family, including first-time German Shepherd owners.
Providing the type of care that Aida required put a significant dent in our vet fund. We want to thank everyone who contributed to Aida's care from the bottom of our hearts. By helping us with Aida's care, you also helped us be better able to help future dogs with medical issues. Thank you!
