German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Black Jack. New name: Kaiser
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
General Color: Black
Current Age: 11 Years 1 Month (best estimate)
Location: Omaha, NE
Black Jack is a 2 year-old black German Shepherd male who came to us as a breeder release from small-town MO. Black Jack was used for breeding, with no socialization, love or care, up until rescue. When his breeder recently decided he had no further use for Black Jack, this super sweet boy found himself in great danger if he could not quickly find rescue. Black Jack was heartworm positive, but he has now completed his treatment, he is fully recovered, and he is ready to look for his forever home!
Black Jack is just now learning about family life, and all about being a loved, family pet. He has not been socialized and he can be shy and timid at first. He is a gentle boy who gets along fine with other dogs of all sizes. Black Jack can be painfully shy/extremely fearful around strangers, especially men, but we are confident that with gentle, patient socialization and training he will quickly improve and come out of his shell.
Black Jack has a fun, playful side that he shows to people that he trusts and he can be quite charming :).
Black Jack is looking for a patient forever pet parent who will not rush him and who will allow him the time to adjust to his new home. Like all German Shepherds, Black Jack will also need structure, leadership, consistency, love, and plenty of exercise and socialization. Black Jack's ideal home will have some GSD experience &/or experience with fearful dogs.
Black Jack is a diamond on the rough who will reward his new family's patience with unrivaled loyalty, love and trust!
