German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

Zuni is a very sweet 8 year-old girl. Zuni was well-loved and cared for prior to rescue. Zuni's owner recently found herself in the difficult position of losing her home, with no place for herself or Zuni to go. Wanting Zuni to continue to have a good life, she sought rescue for her, and that's how Zuni came to be with us.
Zuni is a wonderful girl who loves to play with other dogs and playfully zoom around, and we would really like for her to go to a home with a fenced yard and another dog. Zuni is a wonderfully engaging girl. She not only gets along well with other dogs, she also gets along well with house cats. Zuni truly just wants to be your snuggle buddy. She walks well on a leash, unless a squirrel or a bunny runs by! She knows her basic commands. She loves car rides and in typical Shepherd fashion she likes to follow her foster mom everywhere around the house :). Zuni is a sweet, petite girl who cannot wait to be part of a loving forever home. Zuni is very sweet but she is scared of young children and she will hide to avoid them. For that reason alone, we are asking that she go to a home with no small children.
Zuni is a true jewel, with plenty of energy, stamina, and youthfulness left in her. She would make a wonderful addition to any home looking for a sweet, fun, loyal companion.
